FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS: Oh man, code_epic bought us chocolate! VIRTUAL CHOCOLATE, complete with an awesome comic excerpt! Clearly, this makes her the best person in the world (not to mention the sharpest dresser). Baco, write her a poem about her hair as thanks.

Also, do you realize what this means, Baco? We are receiving joint gifts. Doesn't that make us officially married or something?

Anyway, this is a music post. Usually I try to go a month or so between these things, but I promised wolfenkahlon I'd put up some Cyndi Lauper and Garbage songs, to prove just how awesome they are. Thus, beneath the cut you can find five songs by Cyndi Lauper, and five by Garbage. I had a hell of a time trying to limit the songs I put up. Please support the artists if you like what you hear. These two are among my favourite bands of all time, so I definitely think the deserve the monies.

These songs are going to be up for awhile, so if you happen to be worried about a download limit, you can wait a bit to steel the lootz. They're not going anywhere for at least a month.

Cyndi Lauper - Comfort You -- God I love this song. It's so... I don't know if I can even describe it. It's just a little bit off in a fantastic way, so that the notes get in under your skin and chill your veins. I get such an awesome mood from this, and it fits perfectly with the lyrics. This is so not the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" Cyndi Lauper, no sir.

Cyndi Lauper - Eventually -- I really like the lyrics to this song. They're all deep or something. Anyway! Man, you guys, Cyndi Lauper. This song isn't the bestest quality ever, but the CD isn't for sale anywhere. SIGH.

Cyndi Lauper - Fall Into Your Dreams -- This probably sounds a bit more like the Cyndi Lauper most people are used to. Or at least, it sounds much more eighties-ish to me, but that's mostly the background. This always makes me a little bit depressed, and I'm not entirely sure why.

Cyndi Lauper - The World Is Stone -- THIS SONG IS AWESOME! JUST LIKE CYNDI LAUPER! I actually really love how she sings this. I'm always amazed at all the different things she does with her voice. I badly wanted to put up her version of "If You Go Away," but I don't have it anymore. Anyway, "If You Go Away," is basically her doing this incredible voice acting while singing. MAYBE IT IS JUST ME!

Cyndi Lauper - Shine -- I'm running out of new things to say about these songs! Clearly, I fail at commentary. This song never fails to leave me feeling happier than I was starting out.

Garbage - Only Happy When It Rains -- Garbage has such awesome lyrics. They're always incredibly unconventional, and when they involve romance, it's always of the warped variety.

Garbage - Hammering In My Head -- This song always makes me want to run around and, uh, do crazy things. And mime shooting people while mouthing "BANG BANG". (Oddly enough, it was also one of the songs I always listened to one my way to high school. Although, honestly, I loved that year of high school, so.) It makes me think of fighting and smoky bars in the sprawl, where the music would be pumping out through the speakers so loud you can feel it. Plus, I love the predatory feeling it's got.

Garbage - Bleed Like Me -- OMG I LOVE THE BLEED LIKE ME CD EVERYBODY HAS TO GO BUY IT NOW. Er. I mean. Not only do I like this song a ton, but the lyrics are awesome! It's one of those songs where you listen to it and blink and go, "Huh. That was kinda... kinda deep." Or maybe it's just me.

Garbage - Metal Heart -- OH GOD I LOVE THIS SONG WITH ALL MY BODY. Oh, oh geez, did I say that out loud? I'm sorry, you guys, it just slipped out. Seriously, though, this is one of my favouritest songs ever. This may have to do with the fact that to me, it's kind of the ultimate Zell song. I have this entire music video worked out in my head to it that has to do with a... um. Baco, am I allowed to talk about this? Anyway, this song always makes me want to move, or be able to beat up punching bags. You know, whatever. If you want to apply it other things, feel free, but please don't tell me about it!

Mostly it makes me think of Shadowrun and Michael and Stark, back when, you know, Michael was alive, starting bar fights and kicking ass and dragging each other's asses to the hospital afterwards. It pretty much works for anybody who loves fighting, though, and I also associate it with Saiyuki and, uh, well yeah. Pretty much anybody who loves to fight. SHOCKING.

Squeem: This song tells a story, kinda, and it's really important to listen to it from beginning to end to get the full story. It took me approximately a year to realize that it was actually about gayness, and then I ran to Baco and demanded her opinion and made her listen to it until she agreed with me. I really love it, though, it's just so unique.

Baco: I love Eve 6! Their songs are great, and they named themselves after a one-shot character from The X-Files. Also, this song is totally a slash fic in song form. I like how understated it is.

Garbage - Androgyny

Squeem: Okay, so technically this song isn't about just gayness. It's more about, "Hey, let's not let this "gender" thing get in the way." Which is, you know, pretty awesome.

Squeem: I think this song is more about cross-dressing? But I can't really tell. All I know is that it makes me think of Cloud, or possibly that blonde dude from Gundam Wing. Yeah, I... I don't know.

Baco: I've heard this song is about a character from a book, and yes, crossdressing. I can't recall the title of the book, now, or where I learned that. (Probably songmeanings.net.) I love the song, it's so fun, but unfortunately what I learned about that book combined with the bit about "when the shit came down she was nowhere to be found" means that now I associate this song with Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs. Uncool!

Squeem: I love how this song kind of tells a story. And how it's a bit... uncertain, or just -- still a bit in denial about it all, but getting closer to the truth.

When I saw Cyndi Lauper in concert the year before last, Jill Sobule opened. She sang an acoustic version of "It's Getting Hot In Here". WIN!

Squeem: There are other lyrics to this song, about being a dance-whore, but I decided Baco wouldn't want that sort of business on our LJ. I think I like this song more than she does, and I guess I should warn you that it's kind of... raucous, at times. It took me awhile to like it, but now I do! It might be because I associate it with Shadowrun and bars and Michael and Stark getting into tons of barfights. WHAT DO YOU MEAN, DANCING DOESN'T MEAN FIGHTING LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU

I think I read on Wikipedia that no on in the band is actually gay and that this song is more them teasing one of their inebriated friends, but I could be wrong. I think the same entry said something about modern bands being all, "IT'S COOL TO SING ABOUT CONFUSED SEXUALITY! WHOO!" That might not be the actual quote.

Squeem: Sierra Swan is awesome and you should buy her CD. I think the song makes more sense if you listen to it rather than just read the lyrics. It's not -- it's not overtly gay, but I keep picking up all these subtle clues. I could be way off though!

Squeem: This is another story song. Give it a listen! I just -- I love this song. I love all the subtleties and the slight hesitations and the general resignation and acceptance and the way you can tell she's tentatively letting herself enjoy it.

Baco: Hee! Hee! I love this song so much. It's so fun. And I have an intepretation of it that I really, really like, but I won't go into it here because, um, it's late and I have to go to work tomorrow.

Squeem: This song is fantastic. There are lines that are more gay, but I didn't want to post them because they lose some of the awesomeness if you haven't heard the very first part.

Baco: I love this song, too! I so badly want to read, like, Les Aventures de Monsieur Valentine. (The movie referenced in the lyrics doesn't actually exist.) In my head he's half mad inventor, half swashbuckling valentino, and the stories would have slash and kidnappings and, I dunno, like, time-travel? And fancy dress balls, and banter and over-the-top swordfights with swinging on chandeliers.

Squeem: YES. Oh god, yes. It would be the best thing ever. Except I think I just keep picturing him as some odd version of Balthier and Captain Jack Harkness, which is, you know, possibly why I want to see it so badly.

Baco and Squeem's In Depth and Very Serious Review of Casino Royale

So, I finally got to see Casino Royale. I am so pissed off at the state of movie theaters these days -- I swear, it hasn't been in theatres for much more than a month, and already, it's down to one showing a day, and in only one theater. WHY, MOVIE THEATERS. WHY.

MULTIPLEXES ARE THE DEVIL.

Shh.

But I am so incredibly happy about the actual movie. I realize that thebaconfat probably will hang her head in shame and try to veto my right to say this, but I truly think that half the reason why I'm in love with this movie is because I associate it with Shadowrun. I even constructed this handy diagram to prove it:

- 66% of the time, I was going, OMG YAY HE IS LIKE RECKERT!!!!
- 25% of the time, I went, OMG THAT WAS SUCH A JOSHUA THING TO DO!!!!

Anyway, I really loved this movie and would have done so even without any Shadowrun obsessions interfering. Now to the actual, you know, review.

Casino Royale actually had more eyecandy for the ladies than for the men.

And the gay men! Don't forget the gay men. And the bisexuals. And, you know, everyone else who might conceivably find Daniel Craig hot (ie: everyone, Capt. Jack Harkness, my cat).

I like how Capt. Jack Harkness is put in his own category. I'm sure that there are a lot of people who he wouldn't find hot! Somehow. Somewhere. Although, you know, that might not stop him from shagging them anyway. And, uh, your cat? I think you're just projecting YOUR OWN DESIRES.

Stop psychoanalyzing me in front of LJ people.

Which, frankly, is rather astonishing. For example: this movie only had two hot chicks in it. Neither of whom ever ended up stripping. The closest we got was that first chick wearing a bathing suit, galavanting across the beach with her flock of admirers close behind. (WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT, A HORSE? ROFL.)

I like to think that the kids chasing after the hot horse lady were poor, starving children, gleefully hunting that horse for meat.

ROFLROFL. Your explanation is so much better than mine. During that entire scene, I just kept thinking mocking thoughts about how instead of a knight on a white horse, there were bikini babes on white horses. And, uh, various other, MORE EFFECTIVE mockeries.

I -- I think maybe I'll go collaborate with someone else now. Someone? Anyone?

And then we have the stereotypical wet white shirt scene, but guess who's wearing it. That's right, James Bond. And sure, the main love interest is right next to him, but she's not looking sexy, she's looking traumatized, with bucketfuls of mascara running down her face. Also, you know, there was that scene where James Bond was completely naked.

That scene where James Bond was completely naked was a TORTURE SCENE. You were thinking about Daniel Craig's hot body during a torture scene? Man I'm glad I wasn't the only one.

Dude. Even the male villain was thinking about it. And I wasn't mentioning the torture scene part because it wasn't relevant to my POINT, which was EYE CANDY.

Also, Squeem, please stop sending me pictures of Daniel Craig in various states of undress. Much as I enjoy having an inbox full of man candy, it has gone beyond spam. And what the crap was with that random horribly photoshopped Due South monstrosity? You might as well just FedEx me a half-pony half-monkey monster and be done with it.

~~I SENT THOSE FOR THE LJ PEOPLE LIVING INSIDE YOUR COMPUTER.~~ WHAT?! You told me to send you anything I found! Plus, none of them involved him undressed, except, uh, that one with the bathing suit WHICH WAS A SCENE FROM THE MOVIE, SO KINDLY SHUT YOUR FACEHOLE.

The fight scenes are so kickass and so much better than most movies. It's because they're so... they're brutal, they look real, they look violent. Everyone looks like they're fighting for their lives, fighting to maintain control of the situation, and using any way they can to come out alive. They don't look like they were choreographed by someone who wants the fights to be pretty. Which actually goes along incredibly well with the entire atmosphere of the movie in the first place: this James Bond is not your polite, sophisticated, civilized secret agent. He is down and dirty and does what it takes to get the job done. He's rough and unpolished, gritty and hard.

You are so gay for James Bond.

Back to the point. And he does all this insane, stupid crap and instead of pulling it off and saving the day, he ends up getting so badly hurt. I love it. And there's even a part where he's, you know, stuck in a wheelchair recovering from it all! I'm sure it's still a far cry from realism, but it seems better than the usual stuff.

I really loved the romances before they actually went anywhere. Because that was the thing: they didn't go anywhere. Like, that first chick? I was wondering at Bond's lack of... interest and passion at first, and then it became more and more clear that he was just using her to get at her husband, and then. And then he sent her off to the bedroom and promised he'd be there in a moment, he was just ordering champagne and LEFT HER THERE. OH MY GOSH. Clearly, the way to my heart lies in being a right bastard that doesn't really care enough about hawt sexxors to let it get in the way of anything else. I just. I love that he didn't take her up on it, that the only part he cared about was the game and could care less for the prize.

And the main chick, Vesper? Aside from the FFVI flashbacks, I really liked her up until she went and fell for him. Idiot. And I really liked their interactions: snarky, bastardly, what have you. Although at the end, when he kept telling her that, you know, he was gonna give up secret agenting for her? And all the crap about stripping him of his armour and everything. I got that same lack of... of sincerity, there, same as with the first chick. I mean, while he was off recovering and everything and she came and visited, there was a bit at the beginning of the scene when he did seem to be honest and sincere, but later, after he'd received the money? She said that he seemed closed up again, and I thought so too. I really can't tell if Daniel Craig was trying for that lack of sincerity, because it makes sense to me, or if he was honestly trying to sound sincere. I would like to think he meant to have Bond come across as a bit reserved, still, because I mean, come on. It's James Bond.

Other stuff I really liked about the movie:

- that first chase scene was amazing. I just sat there and stared and thought about a variety of things, including: Prince of Persia, Parkours, and how they had the super agile guy versus the strength guy, and how he took all these dumb risks and fjkldaslkjfd it made me think of Reckert.

I loved that first chase scene so much, but the problem for me was that it was TOO AWESOME. I spent the whole rest of the movie waiting for something to top that first chase scene, and it never did. I mean, the whole tanker truck bit rocked my world, but seriously. Nothing will ever top Amazing Athletic Running Away Guy. And Bond's stupid much less athletic "I'm not really quite sure I can do this but OH WELL HERE I GO" chasing after him. I mean stupid here in the awesomest O HE IS HEADSTRONG I HEART HIM NOW way, not the way where it is actually stupid. But yes. Bond being an idiot! Hearts. And please stop talking about Reckert it is kind of embarrassing you are getting fangirl all over our brand new LJ

I AM SORRY I CANNOT HELP IT. I just feel like I should, you know, be honest about it, instead of telling people how awesome something is without mentioning the fact that they probably won't like it for the same reasons I do.

- I love that James Bond is incapable of not driving fast.

- And like I said, it was awesome that he was "James" throughout the entire movie until that very last scene, when he became Bond.

And what else don't you remember me saying? Huh?!

- The torture scene. I loved the simplicity of it, I loved how it didn't have any fancy gadgets or easily escapable situations. I loved that the main villain got killed by someone who wasn't James Bond.

The torture scene was horrible in an awesome way. I was wincing the whole time. This so wasn't a James Bond movie, though. Very few hot chicks, only one fancy gadget (THAT SCENE RULED THOUGH), and not all that many explosions. Honestly, the lack of explosions disappointed me. I never thought I would say this, but I would have been happy with a few more explosions and a little less character development.

...WHAT. Okay, I guess I can agree with you if by "less character development" you mean "less of the schmancy-pantsy romance crap," but I honestly didn't notice the lack of explosions that much. At least, not until the romance crap, and then I got a little bored.

- The car chase scene that ended in less than a minute. VILLAINS THAT ARE INTELLIGENT, YAY. I love this movie!

The car chase scene was GREAT. And the crash was AMAZING. This entire movie consisted of Bond being awesome while getting the crap kicked out of him. A CINEMATIC TRIUMPH.

OH MAN, THE CRASH. It looked so horrible and it was so awesome that he was so completely injured after it and not all, "MIRACULOUSLY HE CAN STILL FIGHT!" I mean, it's still pretty amazing he didn't die, but, but, still. YOU ARE SO RIGHT.

- How he became immediately suspicious of Vesper and didn't once hesitate. Didn't once go, "SHE CAN'T BE BACKSTABBING ME, WE LOVE EACH OTHER."

And yes! Bond's paranoia and having absolutely no doubts that she was backstabbing him. His, "Allow me," was the best line in the whole movie.

Also, every scene with M in it rocked.

OH MAN, yeah! I forgot about M. And I loved that we got to see her husband! SHE HAS A HUSBAND, or at least, you know, someone she apparently lives and sleeps with. It's awesome! Just because she's so mysterious and stuff. Um.

Maybe she would seem less mysterious if you'd see more than, like, two James Bond movies.

SHUT UP. WHATEV. I'VE SEEN PLENTY OF JAMES BOND MOVIES.

Things I didn't like:

- Okay, the poker was a little bit boring. But they did a pretty good job keeping it short and sweet, and adding entertaining bits.
- The, uh, the actual romance between Bond and Vesper. You know, once Vesper was like, "Sure! You're a nice guy after all!" and Bond was like, "I will quit my job!"

Agreed on the romance. It was SNARKTASTIC AND GREAT right up until it stopped being subtext and started being text. Seriously, the dinner jacket vs. dinner jacket bit? WICKED. And then contrast that with the lameass talk about armour and being a man and guards being let down.

- And, uh, the horse. That was kind of hilarious.

Is there too much brown? There's too much brown, isn't there. If you want less brown, we could go with blue and gold... of course, then I'd have to go around changing all of the titles to Lone Star related phrases, and no one wants that. No one except me.

Um, anyway, yeah, you can change stuff if you want. I just went on a customizing rampage, so I won't mind if you think it's ugly as all hell.
